Patrick hits all four in Seagulls rout

Swpl Saturday 3rd Oct 2009

Mousehole 4, Wendron Utd 0

TOM Patrick scored all four goals as the Seagulls recorded their first league win of the season and climbed out of the bottom two in the table at the expense of a Wendron side that remain rooted to the bottom rung after this basement battle at Trungle Parc on Saturday, writes Peter Heyman .

It was the home side's first victory under Mousehole manager James Prisk, ironically in what was to prove his last game in charge (see full story, back page). Prisk was understandably delighted to have broken his duck. "I was extremely pleased, not least because we also avoided being the first side to concede a goal to Wendron this season.

"Our first win has been a long time coming, but hopefully we can now build on it, which I'm sure we can as we should already have won a couple of games that we let slip. The win should give us the confidence we need to move on."

The home side got off to a flying start when Perran Reynolds set Patrick free down the left flank and he beat a defender before cutting in and firing a fierce shot across the keeper into the far corner.

Ten minutes later Reynolds fed Marcus Smith who provided the perfect cross for Patrick to double his side's lead with a shot from 12 yards.

It was all Mousehole at this point with Patrick having a good shout for a penalty turned down after he was brought down as he closed in on goal, but the referee ruled the offence was committed just outside the box.

However, the Seagulls extended their lead on the half hour when neat interplay between Barrie Prowse and Jack Wing allowed Patrick to race though and chip the third over the advancing keeper.

To their credit, the visitors made a furious start to the second half, firing a long range shot against the home crossbar and going close on two occasions from goalmouth scrambles. But with the centre-back partnership of Ollie Pridham and Steve Miller in resilient mood, Wendron were unable to find a way through the home defence.

And their fate was sealed midway through the half when Prowse fed Emil Ivanov who supplied the final ball for Patrick to slide home his fourth of the afternoon. Smith twice went close to scoring against his old club, substitute Edward Jones on his debut headed narrowly wide and Reynolds was only just off target with a header from Jon Tonkin's corner as Mousehole finished the game well on top.

Mousehole: R Gendall, James Tonkin, P Reynolds, O Pridham, S Miller, B Prowse, J Wing (W Elstone 65), Jon Tonkin (J Franklin 72), M Smith, E Ivanov (E Jones 68), T Patrick.

Man of the match: Tom Patrick (Mousehole).

Mousehole 2-2 Plymstock United

THE Seagulls chalked up their first point of the season after taking a two-goal interval lead, but had to settle for a share of the spoils as Plymstock hit back with two late goals at Trungle Parc on Saturday.

Mousehole boss James Prisk said: "We played really well in the first half and the only thing that let us down was a bit of fitness in the closing stages.

"Although we lost Perran Reynolds with a suspected broken wrist after half an hour, there were plenty of positives in our performance.

"Jon Tonkin ran them ragged down the right flank and new signing Marcus Smith made an impressive debut up front, while the new centre back pairing of Steve Miller and Will Blight worked really well."

The home side got off to a flying start with James Tonkin combining with his brother Jon, who crossed for Tom Patrick to fire home the opener with a shot on the turn after just two minutes.

Good work by Smith and Patrick then set up a chance for Jon Tonkin to shoot narrowly wide before Smith again set Tonkin free to swing over another cross for Reynolds to bury into the back of the net with a bullet header after 22 minutes.

Reynolds then had to go off after being on the wrong end of a fierce volley to be replaced by Joel Keen, who was soon involved in a sweet move with Ross Badcock, which resulted in Smith firing his shot just past the post.

After the break Barrie Prowse and Bradley Wills continued to control the midfield for Mousehole for a while. But the visitors gradually got back in the game and reduced the arrears on 70 minutes through Joe Ridgeway's long range shot.

And two minutes later they were back on level terms when a long throw-in by substitute Neil Kennedy found Mike O'Neill, who fired home from close range.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the closing stages, Patrick seeing his thunderous shot from wide out cannon back off the Plymstock upright, while at the other end Kevin Francis rattled the home post in the dying moments.

Mousehole: R Gendall, James Tonkin, R Badcock, W Blight, S Miller, Jon Tonkin, P Reynolds J Keen 30), B Prowse, B Wills (J Wing 80), T Patrick, M Smith (JD Bevington 75).

Man of the match: Jon Tonkin (Mousehole).

Hayle 6 Mousehole 0

FOUR goals in 10 minutes early in the second half saw Hayle brush aside a battling Mousehole side in an entertaining local derby at Trevassack Park on Tuesday night.

Hayle opened the scoring on the half hour when Dan Magee's initial shot was well saved by young Seagulls' keeper Ryan Gendall, the ball falling to Wolstencroft whose shot was blocked before Shiels tucked away the second rebound.

Although Shiels and Wolstencroft, who were well served on the flanks by Magee and Ryan Stevens, were off target with several other attempts on goal, it was not all one-way traffic with JD Bevington hitting the post for the visitors and the loose ball just evading Joel Keen on the rebound. Youngsters Bradley Wills and Ross Badcock also tested the Hayle wall with free kicks in dangerous positions. With the second half only three minutes old Gendall pulled off a fine save from Shiels' penalty attempt, diving full length to his left to turn the ball away. But Shiels redeemed himself five minutes later when he fired a clever shot through the keeper's legs to put the home side two up.

Ryan Stevens grabbed the third three minutes later when he cut in from the left and beat two defenders before curling a precise shot into the right hand corner. And only another four minutes had gone by when Wayne Quinn gave Gendall no chance with a fierce drive from the edge of the area after Simon Stevens' free kick had been blocked.

Wolstencroft deservedly got on the scoresheet after 63 minutes when he shot into the left hand corner after Shiels had laid off Guy Marshall's through ball. Chris Russell rounded off the scoring on 71 minutes with a header from Quinn's corner.

The visitors, to their credit, kept battling to the end and Keen saw a shot cleared off the line from Badcock's through ball. But as Mousehole manager James Prisk admitted afterwards: "We were a bit naïve against one of the stronger teams in the league and they put in a lot of quality balls that we had trouble dealing with – it was a bit like men against boys at times."

Hayle: Dave Cheal, Scott Jose, Matt Laity, Chris Russell, Simon Stevens, Dan Magee, Guy Marshall, Wayne Quinn, Ryan Stevens, Matt Shiels, Chris Wolstencroft. Subs: Sean McMahon (for Marshall 75), Carl Shorthouse (for Magee 80), Robert Troon (for Russell 85).

Mousehole: Ryan Gendall, James Tonkin, Mark Trevail, Toby Cape, Steve Miller, JD Bevington, Perran Reynolds, Bradley Wills, Barrie Prowse, Joel Keen, Ross Badcock. Subs: Jack Wing (for Miller 60), Jon Tonkin (for Bevington 65), Simon Dixon (for Wills 65).

Man of the match: Matt Shiels (Hayle)

Mousehole 1 Camelford 2

A GRANDSTAND finish was not quite enough to earn the Seagulls a point against a Camelford side that produced the greater finishing power on the day at Trungle Parc on Saturday.

With Emil Ivanov, Joel Keen, Tom Patrick and Jon Tonkin all unavailable, the home side found themselves short of their normal strike force up front.

"We needed a few more options at the top and it would have been a different game," said new boss James Prisk. "But there were plenty of positives, with Bradley Wills and Barrie Prowse very strong in the centre of midfield and Steve Miller making an impressive debut at centre back."

The visitors created some good chances in the first half, but failed to put any of them away. At the other end Ross Badcock fired a curling shot just wide and Perran Reynolds was narrowly off target with a header from a corner.

Camelford continued to pose a threat after the break, with home keeper Ryan Gendall forced into two saves right out of the top drawer. But there was nothing he could do about the visitors' opener on 55 minutes, Mark Gusterson heading home from James Mabley's cross.

Mabley was again the provider for the Camels' second goal 10 minutes later, with Kevin Murt scoring with an opportunist strike from close range.

Mousehole fought back strongly in the closing stages and after Badcock had curled another shot inches wide, the introduction of JD Bevington from the bench immediately created problems for the visitors. And when he was upended just outside the area, Wills dispatched a superb 25-yard free kick that went in off the upright.

The home side piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser and Prowse saw one long range effort fly just wide. But for all their dominance the Seagulls were unable to salvage the point they arguably deserved.

Mousehole: Ryan Gendall, James Tonkin, Mark Trevail, Toby Cape, Steve Miller, Perran Reynolds, Bradley Wills, Barrie Prowse, Ross Badcock, Jack Wing, Simon Dixon. Subs: Matt Howes (for Wing, 60), JD Bevington (for Reynolds, 75), Sean Nana Obeng (for Reynolds, 80), Will Blight (not used).

Man of the match: Bradley Wills
